The Worst Advice We’ve Ever Heard About Physical Therapy

Look, the physical therapists at NY Physical Therapy in New York, NY have heard a lot of crazy things in our clinic when it comes to the preconceived notions a lot of people seem to have about physical therapy.

Sometimes, we can see where people are coming from, especially if they’ve never had to see a physical therapist before. With that being said, there are quite a few myths we’d like to bust regarding what physical therapists do, as well as some of the worst bits of “advice” out there about physical therapy!

“Physical therapy hurts.”

This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear about physical therapy! Physical therapy at NY Physical Therapy is not supposed to hurt, and a therapist’s job and ultimate goal with your treatment is never going to be to cause you more pain.

A New York physical therapist’s role is to help you improve your strength, regain mobility and function, improve your range of motion, and get back to doing the things you love without pain. They want you to feel better leaving the office than you did when you came in, not the other way around!

“Surgery is cheaper than physical therapy, and it’s a guaranteed fix!”

Surgery and invasive operations are not cheaper than physical therapy in the long-run, and their outcomes are never guaranteed! Surgery puts a lot of stress and trauma on a person’s body, and 9 out of 10 times, you’ll need physical therapy after surgery to recover anyway.

Why not give it a try first before dropping your hard-earned bucks on a pricey operation? The average cost of surgery (like a hip replacement) is usually between $31,839 and $44,816 without insurance, according to Cost Helper. Trust us when we tell you, physical therapy at NY Physical Therapy is worth a try.

“Physical therapy is only for senior citizens.”

Survey says: WRONG! Physical therapy can benefit children, adolescents, young adults, and senior citizens alike. You don’t have to be attending Wednesday night Bingo every week to be considered a good candidate for pain management and relief. Some physical therapists work specifically with children dealing with growth, movement, and development disorders. Physical therapy certainly does not discriminate!

“You will have to see a physical therapist for the rest of your life.”

In a majority of cases, this statement is not true. Although some patients are in long-term care, their conditions are those that require ongoing physical therapy. If you see a physical therapist for a work-related injury, an acute or chronic back pain problem, or to avoid surgery, chances are that you’ll be in and out of treatment in a matter of months.

Don’t let the fear of seeing a physical therapist (and making a new friend!) for a little while scare you away from getting the pain relief you need.

“Physical therapy isn’t covered by insurance.”

This one is by far some of the worst advice we’ve ever heard about physical therapy! Although everybody’s insurance policy is different, it is worth looking into the fine print to see how much of your treatment will be covered. In fact, according to the APTA, “If you have a federally-qualified HMO plan through your employer, your physical therapy will be covered.”

If you aren’t sure how much of a co-pay you’ll have to give upfront, call our office. One of our staff members will be happy to look into your insurance policy with you to help.
